One message received, three ways to answer.

Five tools, one per tab

Translate

Paste the message. Every word is explained, then you reply.

A message comes in: sba7 lkhir, la bas? You paste it into Translate. The dictionary cards explain it word by word, offline. If you want more, the app explains the sentence, its tone and its intent, and offers three replies. Each reply has its voice. The other way round, you type in English and get the sentence in darija, with the Arabic script and the word-by-word.

Coach

The Coach plays the scene with you

Fourteen real-life scenes: at the café, in a taxi, with the in-laws, at the souk. The Coach plays the other part and offers two lines each turn. When a sentence checks out word by word against the dictionary, the card shows a badge. When you slip, it tells you how people actually say it. You can also ask it about grammar or family etiquette.

Voice

You hear every word in Moroccan

The 4,000 words, 387 phrases and 620 conjugated verbs each have a voice, recorded at normal and slow speed. Tap the disc and you hear the word the way it is said in Morocco. The voices are inside the app: they work in airplane mode.

A play disc on every card.

Translate

You speak to a man or to a woman

In darija the sentence changes with the person in front of you. You pick “to a man” or “to a woman”, “family” or “polite”, and the translation follows. Under the sentence, a note explains the word that matters: lwalida is the most respectful way to speak of someone's mother.

Translate, French to darija: the sentence salam, kif dayra lwalida? with the toggles to a man, to a woman, family, polite
Two toggles change the sentence.

Learn

Your daily dose takes three minutes

Three drills, drawn from the scene in progress and the words you kept. You listen, you build the sentence, you complete the conjugation, and you say the phrase out loud. “Say it” listens and answers Good, Almost or Try again. There is no score, no hearts to lose, no penalty.

Every form has its voice, and “the thing to remember” fits in one line. The dictionary searches in English, arabizi or Arabic: wach, wash, wesh and واش lead to the same word.

The questions we get

Does the app work offline?

Mostly. The dictionary, the voices, the message decoder, the drills, the path and the review ship inside the app and work in airplane mode. Translating a whole sentence, the Coach, microphone input and “Say it” need the network. A banner tells you when you are offline.

Is the Coach a person?

No. It is a language model that plays the other part of a scene, answers your questions and suggests lines. Every sentence it offers is checked word by word against our dictionary, and the card tells you when everything checks out. It can be wrong: the “Report” button is there for that.

I don't spell darija the way you do. Is that a problem?

No, and that is on purpose. Darija has no official spelling. Wach, wash, wesh, ouach or واش lead to the same word. Arabizi digits are understood, and so is a typo. Read the guide

What do the digits 3, 7 and 9 mean in texts?

They stand for Arabic letters that Latin script lacks. 3 is ع, a throat sound, as in 3afak. 7 is ح, a breathy h, as in 7lib. 9 is ق, a k from the back of the mouth, as in 9elb. Read the guide

How do you conjugate a verb in darija?

The present takes the prefix ka-: kanbghi, I want. The future is marked with ghadi. The negation wraps the verb with ma…ch. The app conjugates 620 verbs in the past, present, future and imperative, feminine included, each form with its voice. Read the guide

How do I understand a message my family sends me?

Paste it into Translate. The dictionary cards explain it word by word, on your phone. If you want, the app then explains the whole sentence and offers three replies with a voice. Read the guide

Which phrases should I learn first?

The ones from the table and everyday politeness: bghit kas d atay 3afak, I would like a glass of tea, please. The Coach's path starts with greetings and family, and you can start from another scene if you prefer. Read the guide

Are the words from all over Morocco?

The base is the darija of Morocco as spoken in the big cities, understood everywhere. When a word is regional, the entry says so. When we are not sure, we prefer to leave it unlabelled rather than guess.

Is the voice a real Moroccan?

It is a generated Moroccan voice, picked after an audition, the same across the 4,000 words, the phrases and the verbs. We listened to the clips and dropped the ones that sounded wrong. If a word sounds off to you, “Report” sends it to us and we redo it.

How do I restore my purchase or cancel?

“Restore my purchases” is on the subscription screen, the one that shows at launch. Subscriptions are managed in iOS Settings, your name, Subscriptions. Lifetime is a one-time purchase: nothing to cancel.

Who makes the app

We built it for those who understand but don't dare to answer

We are French-Moroccan. We grew up between two languages, at meals where everyone spoke darija and some of us answered in French. The family's messages arrived in arabizi, and we read them one beat late.

So we wrote the dictionary ourselves, word by word, keeping the Arabic script next to the Latin one. We put a Moroccan voice on every entry. And we built the Coach so that it checks every sentence against that dictionary instead of making things up.

When a word is missing or sounds wrong, tell us from the app. We read everything, we fix fast, and requested words go into the next update.
